David and Tom Gardner: The Motley Fool
Personal Finance Workbook:
Your Foolproof Guide to Organizing Cash and
Building Wealth
FINAL DESIGN MEMO
Note 1: This is a very complicated manuscript with many
tables, boxes, and worksheets, most of which will have to be designed
individually.
Note 2: As I
finished going through the manuscript, and as I reread it, I added some
elements and changed my mind about others, which appeared to be the same
elements although typed differently from one chapter to the next. All
additions, deletions, and corrections are indicated in RED and boldface.
Note 3: There are some TKs (I have flagged them): pp. vi
(Acknowledgments), vii (Dedication), 61 (chart), 273 (table), 306 (table)
Note 4: There are some notes to "production" (i.e., the
designer) in the text (I have flagged them): pp. 38, 72, 79, 96, 254, 256, 370

Subheads
Notes:
1.
The authors have indicated certain heads as numbered heads. I don't see that
the number is always necessary (see, e.g., pp. 145, 146, 237, 238, 239, 240,
300, 303) and have deleted it.
2.
Heads of the same level are often formatted differently in the manuscript. This
is particularly true of the A heads.
3.
Every chapter has an AA head under the CT (although it is not in fact typed on
pp. 2 and 540, it should be there).
4.
Many of the subheads are typed initial cap only. I am marking them for c/lc
except for B heads and QHs (question heads).
A
(First-level subhead; c/lc): 3, 5, 6, 9, 10, 13, 14, 16, 17, 20, 21, 24, 25,
29, 31, 32, 33, 35, etc.
AA
(First-level subhead directly under CT; c/lc): 2, 28, 55, etc.
A1 (First
paragraph following an A head): 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 13, 14, 16, 17, 20, 21, 25,
29, 31, 32,
33, 35, etc.
B
(Second-level subhead; c/lc; sometimes numbered):
117, 123, 125, 133, 135, 139, 142, 144,
145, etc.
BB
(Second-level subhead directly under A head): 188, 525
(A head added)
B1 (First
paragraph following an B head): 117, 123, 125, 134, 135, 139, 142, 144, 145,
etc.
C
(Third-level head; c/lc; no number EXCEPT for p. 476):
32-4, 118, 124, 125, 140, 141, 145,
146, 476
C1 (First
paragraph following a C head): 32-34, 124, 125, 140, 141, 145, 146, 476
D
("Sixty-Second Guide" subheads; these appear at the beginning of each
chapter; initial cap
only): 2-3, 5-6
("Discovery" subheads), 28-9, 55-57, etc.; also on pp.
196-8
D (First
paragraph following a D head): 2-3, 5-6, 28-9, 55-7, etc.
E
(Numbered head; initial cap): 75-6, 158
E1 (First
paragraph following an E head): 75-6, 158
F
(Fourth-level head; c/lc): 312, 313
QH
(Question head; initial cap only, "Q" is followed by a colon): 20,
21, 83, 84, 86, 122, etc.
QH1 (First paragraph following a question head): 20,
21, 82, 83, 84, 86, 122, etc.
RUNA
(First-level run-in head; c/lc or initial cap only) (NOTE:
I decided to change almost all
of these to BPs and NPs; I think
they were simply typed inconsistently from one chapter
to another): 85, 182,
274, 282-4, 295-6, 314-15, 316-17, 329, 332, 334,
338
Prose Extracts
EXT: 245
EXT2 (I have marked to center these): 234 ("Invest early . .
."); 324, 326 ("Don't do it!");
507 ("No.")
Spacebreaks
SB
(Spacebreak): 3, 29, 34, 115, 159, etc. (always after the "Sixty-Second
Guide")
SB1
(First paragraph following a spacebreak): 3, 29, 34,
115 (drop the head "Insurance"), 159,
etc.
Lists
Notes:
1.
Some lists have bold lead-ins, as on pp. 14-15, 49-50, 84, 91-2, 108-10, 136-7,
164, 192, etc. These are sometimes typed on a separate line, as on pp. 136-7,
287-8, 292-3, but I have run them in.
2.
Some lists immediately follow a head, as on pp. 24, 91, 98, 102, 297, 299, etc.
3.
Some lists are checklists and are preceded by short underscores, as on p. 157.
4.
Some entries in the NPBs are more than one paragraph (pp. 68, 70-1, 248-54,
292, etc.).
5. I have changed the "checklists" on pp. 441-459 to BPs as I
don't feel that they are really checklists.

Boxed Copy (BX)
Notes:
1.
The authors have called these sidebars, but I have used BX for all of them,
especially as many are quite long and it would be impossible to run them as
sidebars in a book. It seems to me that there are way too many boxes, so
occasionally, to simplify the design a bit and where it seemed appropriate, I
changed a box into running text (pp. 86-88, 264-5,
282-4, 296-8, 340-9, 386-90).

Worksheets (WS)
Notes:
1.
These are basically all different and will have to be designed differently.
What they all have in common is blanks that the reader has to fill in. I've
marked what I could in the way of heads and so forth, but there are other
elements that I'm not sure how to mark, so I have just indicated the whole
thing in the ms. as WS.
2. Some of these are called "Worksheets" in the text, some
"Cheat Sheets," some "Plans." I have changed them all to
"Worksheets" as I think they are all really the same thing.
3. Some of
the tables have graphic elements in them, though I'm
not sure exactly what they're supposed to mean (pp. 220, 222, 228, 230, 233).
4. I have now indicated in this design memo ALL the pages that
worksheets are found on and ALL the elements with each one (at least the ones
that I could figure out a code for), to avoid confusion, as some of them are not
obviously worksheets from the way they are typed.
5. According to the authors'
note at the top of p. 370, the worksheet on pp. 370-3 should be in the
appendix. Also, see the statement on p. 1f: "At the very end of this book
is a one-stop shop where all of the relevant worksheets are copied." I
don't see these at the end of the book in the manuscript, and I don't know if
they are to appear in the text where indicated and ALSO at the end of the book,
or what.
Worksheets (complete list): 7-9 (no WSH), 22, 62-3, 63-4, 72-3, 81-2,
103, 105-7, 118-2,

344-8 (these last two are NOT boxed, as indicated in the ms.),

Tables
Notes:
1.
Like the worksheets, these come in many different formats and will have to be
designed individually. Some are regular tables, while others are fill-in charts
for the reader. The latter should perhaps retain the boxes, as shown in the
manuscript, as I think these are meant to make filling in the blanks easier.
Otherwise perhaps underscores of appropriate width could be used where the
answers are to be filled in.
2. I
started to call out the table bodies by number of columns, but then I noticed
that tables with the same number of columns often had very different spatial
divisions, so I have just called them out as TB, as they will have to be
spec'ed individually.
3.
Some of the tables have TH, some don't. Note that in each table called a
"Bit-by-Bit Budget," that phrase should be a TH, not a TCH as typed. These appear on pp. 26, 52, 112, 152, 206, 268, 358, 415,
and 550.
4.
Some of the tables are called "Worksheets," but if they are in table
format I have coded them as tables (pp. 72, etc.).
5. Some of the tables have graphic elements in them (pp. 220, 222, 228,
233). (See Worksheets, above.)
6.
Two tables are TK (pp. 273, 306)
7. I
think the shading in the tables on pp. 129, 256-8, and 429-40 is unnecessary.
Also, I have turned the vertical heads in the table on pp. 429-440 into normal
horizontal ones.
