The Parker Wine Buyer's Guide

PROPER NAMES--FINAL LIST III

(8 March 2002)

(NOTE: in general, these are only the names I found problems with; names that are correct in the manuscript are simply indicated as such in the manuscript by a circled check mark over the name.)

ENCLOSURES (see below for descriptions)

1. List of the 2002 evaluations of the top Italian evaluators of wine, from www.lavinium.com (7 pp.) (complete version of the one I enclosed with Preliminary Name List II)

2. List of the composition of Piemontese wines, same source (9 pp.) (this was enclosed with Name List II)

3. List of the composition of wines from the other regions of Italy, same source (many pp.)

4. Description of the winegrowing region of Le Langhe, with vineyard names (same source) (3 pp.) (this was enclosed with Name List II)

5. Floppy disk II, containing links to many of the Web sites I consulted, sorted by section, plus this document in Lotus Word Pro and Word formats

First, a note on my research sources. I have, in my own library, the 1998 English edition of Gambero Rosso (I refer to this in the marginal notes in the manuscript as GR), plus a detailed technical guide to the Italian wines imported by Vias Imports in New York City that I received when I attended a wine tasting in September 1998. Also, while I was in Abruzzo and Rome last month I made a point of reading wine labels in grocery stores (for the less expensive wines), in restaurants in Avezzano and Capistrello, and in the display cases of specialty wine shops in Rome (for the more expensive wines) to check spellings and other information.

I have also done a lot of research on the Internet. The primary Internet sources I used to verify the names of producers, vineyards, and wines were as follows.

Where the producer has a Web site, of course I used that as the primary and authoritative source. Often these sites show the actual labels of the wine. Of course, sometimes with the labels there are design considerations, such as when a designer decides to use all lowercase (for example, ca' romè, which I have standardized to Ca' Romè).

Apart from that, there are several good Italian overall information sites on the wines of Italy, the most useful and, I think, most reliable being www.lavinium.com. Among the pages is this one:

www.lavinium.com/italiano/vdit2002.htm  This is a three-column listing of the 2002 evaluations of the three major Italian evaluators of Italian wines, Slow Food/Gambero Rosso (The 241 "Three Glasses") (I also have the 1998 edition of this guide), I Vini di Veronelli (The 212 "Three Stars"), and Associazione Italiana Sommeliers (The 331 "Five Grapes"). These are mostly 1997-1999 vintages with the odd 2000, exactly the period The Parker Wine Buyer's Guide covers. (Note that in the second column, "I Vini di Veronelli 2002," personal names are reversed, with the last name first and the first name last, no comma, as the Italians often do in formal or legal contexts.)

On the same site are the following pages, among others:

www.lavinium.com/italiano/uvapiemo.htm Wine types, producers, and composition of Piedmontese wines (9 printed pages)

www.lavinium.com/italiano/uvatosca.htm Wine types, producers, and composition of Tuscan wines (21 printed pages)

www.lavinium.com/italiano/uvaabruz.htm Wine types, producers, and composition of Abruzzese wines (2 printed pages)

And so on, one for each region of Italy.

www.lavinium.com/italiano/barolcru.htm Description of the winegrowing area of Le Langhe, with maps and a list of the vineyards that produce the Barolo grand crus (2 printed pages)

Then there is this one:

marche.isapori.it/vini_guide_2001/premiati_2001_ais.htm The list from Associazione Italiana Sommeliers, but in a different format (7 printed pages)

A couple of notes on orthography:

Unlike in French, the Italians do indicate accents on capital letters, but they do so by using an apostrophe after the accented letter. Thus Ca' Romè, for example, becomes CA' ROME' if we are going to set the producers' names in all caps.

Please note that in the manuscript, I have made a check mark with a circle above every name that I've checked. When I have changed the spelling of a name or added an accent, I have noted in the right-hand margin of the manuscript what my source was. Obviously if the author has a bottle that says something different, that would be the deciding factor!

Key to abbreviations for the various manuscript sections:

II = Italy Intro

IP = Italy Piedmont

IT = Italy Tuscany

IO = Italy Other

NOTE 1: Where I've only added "Vigna" or "Vigneto," as indicated in the various sources I've used, I have not included it in this list.

NOTE 2: Sorì, Söri, Surì, and Sirì all seem to be variant spellings of the same word. I have looked at the wine labels, and they do differ from one producer to another.

NOTE 3: Alphabetization: In lists in the manuscript, names beginning with the following are alphabetized by the firm name or the family name, as applicable: Cantina, Eredi, Fattoria, Podere, Poderi, Vigna, Vinaiolo, Il, I, La, Le. Names beginning with Abbazia are under "A"; Badia and Borgo are under "B"; Ca', Cantina, Cantine, Casa, Casale, Cascina, Castello, Castiglion, Ciacci, Colle, and Cooperativa are under "C"; Feudi is under "F"; Marchesi is under "M"; Pieve is under "P"; Rocche is under "R." (These were done inconsistently from one section to another, and I had to make value judgments.) Note that if "Fattoria" or "Podere" is followed by "Il," "I," "La," or "Le," I alphabetized them under "I" or "L" to keep from going to the third word of the phrase for the alphabetization.

NOTE 4: I've left out "Tenuta" for consistency when it is followed directly by a name, as it was not used consistently in the manuscript and is optional. If it's followed by "di," "del," or "dei," I've left it in and alphabetized it under the proper name.

NOTE 5: "A. A." is not somebody's initials, it means "Azienda Agricola," which I have left out as it was not put in consistently and is optional. It simply means "Agricultural Business" and is, I believe, the legal title of every wine producer in the book.

NOTE 6: As far as I can tell by the Italian lists in books and on Web sites, "Barbera" and "Dolcetto" should always be followed by a modifier (for example, "d'Alba").

NOTE 7: Some of the Langhe Rosso names cited in the manuscript use it in their names, some not. For consistency's sake, and after consulting Italian Web sites, which as a rule specify it, I've added it where appropriate. Also, "Langhe," as being the wine type, should always come first in the wine name.

NOTE 8: Spell out "San," "Santo," "Santa," "Sant'."

NOTE 9: Producers' names starting with "De" or "Di" are alphabetized under "D." (This is Italian style.)

The following are names in which I've found spelling problems.
